Train of Mist
2026 | 10 min | Color | Sound | 16mm, Digital | 2.39:1
From inside the funicular heading to Harder Kulm, the landscapes in the foreground and background appear to shift at different speeds with the train’s motion. These vistas gradually accumulate, yielding various impressions.
Director's Note
This film is in the same vein as Snowy Train, a film that I made from footage shot on a train traveling from Wengen to Lauterbrunnen. The railroad serves as the structural motif in both films; however, time is rendered differently in each one. In Snowy Train, the intersection of one moving image progressing forward and another receding backward creates a sense of repetition and return. By contrast, Train of Mist employs a single moving image, generating a continuous flow of time. Here, time unfolds as a process of accumulating changes and moving forward. This sense of time becomes concrete within the frame. The horizontally expanded screen does not maintain a fixed perspective but integrates the elements perceived at varied distances and speeds within itself. The foreground and background landscapes, which seem to pass at different speeds as the train moves, generate subtle tension. The overlapping of images—one captured in-camera and the other processed—reveals the gaps between frames. In this film, time offers a nonlinear yet multifaceted experience through impressions of merging and permeation of visual layers.
